JIU Mission Trip 2025: Service and Cross-Cultural Learning in Sumba

Jakarta International University (JIU) successfully held its annual Mission Trip 2025 from May 26–31, 2025. This year’s trip took place on Sumba Island, East Nusa Tenggara, involving 25 participants, including 15 students and 10 faculty and staff members. Over six days, the participants engaged in a series of service and educational activities that enriched them academically, socially, and spiritually.

The journey began early on May 26, when the group departed from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and flew to Lede Kalumbang Airport in Tambolaka. Upon arrival in Southwest Sumba, they traveled to their accommodation at All Love Dormitory in Lamboya, where they rested and prepared for the full week ahead.

The first day of service began with a visit to SD Sikka (Sikka Elementary School), where JIU students and staff taught basic English to first and second-grade students using fun and interactive methods. The children responded with great enthusiasm and showed high levels of excitement during the learning sessions, which were accompanied by educational games. For the JIU students, it was a valuable opportunity to experience teaching and connecting with young learners.

In the afternoon, the team continued their activities at SMA Negeri 1 (Lamboya State High School). The English lessons were tailored for teenage learners, with a focus on engaging, playful, and interactive methods. Students learned while playing, and the session ended with outdoor games and group photos to capture the memories.

On the third day, the group visited SMA Kristen Waikabubak (Waikabubak Christian High School). Here, the JIU team led various educational games and sessions, such as Simon Says, All About Me!, and the widely loved Bingo Game. These activities not only helped improve the students’ English skills but also built a strong connection between the JIU participants and the school community. The day concluded with a cultural visit to Prai Ijing Traditional Village, where the team learned about the unique customs and heritage of Sumba’s indigenous people.

The fourth day, which coincided with Ascension Day, began with a worship service at GKS Praibakul Church. Afterwards, the team joined the church’s youth group in a collaborative outreach activity and visited Weigali Traditional Village for a day of compassion-based service and deeper community engagement. This day became a profound spiritual and reflective moment for all, especially the students, as they witnessed the impact of serving others with their time, energy, and talents.

On the fifth day, the team continued their service at TK Sikka (Sikka Kindergarten) and SMK Pariwisata (Lamboya Tourism High School). At the kindergarten, the participants were taught through songs, visuals, and games. Meanwhile, the high school students were engaged in interactive English sessions that encouraged them to gain confidence in speaking and using the language in daily life.

The Mission Trip concluded on May 31, as the team traveled back to Jakarta, bringing home not only exhaustion but also meaningful insights and valuable life experiences.

The Mission Trip 2025 was not just an act of service—it was a powerful avenue for student development at JIU. Through this trip, students had the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, embrace different cultural perspectives, and apply their talents in real-world contexts. It provided a hands-on experience that extended far beyond classroom learning, fostering growth in character, empathy, and leadership. JIU believes that cross-cultural experiences like this play a vital role in shaping resilient, open-minded young leaders who are ready to make a meaningful impact—wherever they go
