Tuesday, June 10, 2025 — The campus of Jakarta International University (JIU) was buzzing with excitement and energy. But this time, it wasn’t due to extra classes (don’t worry—it’s vacation time!), but rather the celebration of Fun Sports Day, bringing fresh energy and enthusiasm to students still on campus!
Starting at 1:30 PM local time, the campus sports field transformed into a mini arena filled with movement, laughter, and the spirit of camaraderie. The event wasn’t just attended by JIU students; it was also joined by eight guests from Jakarta and several students from Iowa State University, USA.
The day kicked off with a thrilling basketball match. Mixed teams of JIU and Iowa State students quickly built chemistry on the court. Although there was a little awkwardness at first due to different playing styles, within minutes, everyone blended in like old friends playing on the same NBA team!
Next came volleyball, and the energy only went up. Cheers echoed across the court as players pulled off powerful smashes and heroic diving saves. This was where cross-cultural teamwork truly began to shine, with players from diverse backgrounds complementing each other’s moves and strategies.
Then came the futsal match, which brought a fast-paced and challenging atmosphere. A mixed team of students from Jakarta and Iowa went head-to-head against JIU’s local squad. Even under the blazing sun, spirits remained high, with players giving their all, interspersed with laughter, light-hearted moments, and cheers from the sidelines.
To wrap up the day, everyone joined in for a friendly game of frisbee. For many, it was their first time trying the sport, which only added to the fun. There were frisbees flying into bushes, and a few sailing wildly toward the spectators—but it was all met with laughter and smiles. The friendly chaos brought everyone closer together in the most joyful way.
Fun Sports Day wasn’t only about games and competition—it was about cross-cultural connections, new friendships, and creating positive, joyful memories during the break. Some university staff also joined in to support and even play alongside the students, making the event feel even more inclusive and community-oriented, one of the values that JIU holds dear.
In the midst of academic responsibilities and routines, this event served as a refreshing reminder of the importance of taking time to play, connect, and simply enjoy being together. The laughter that lingered after the games and the sweat-soaked shirts told a story of joy, unity, and renewed motivation.
Once again, JIU has shown that a university is more than a place to study—it’s also a place to grow, connect, and have meaningful fun.
