On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, JIU organized a seminar on mental health titled “Managing Emotions.” This seminar aimed to provide students with the tools to better understand various mental health conditions, as well as to raise awareness about the importance of mental health in everyday life. In addition to educating students, the event offered an opportunity for those who sought additional support to participate in rotating counseling sessions.
The seminar kicked off at 1 PM and attracted a significant number of JIU students, eager to learn about emotional well-being. The event began with a comprehensive presentation on the latest facts and research related to mental health. This portion of the seminar focused on dispelling myths and providing accurate information about mental health conditions that students might encounter, both personally and in others. It was emphasized that understanding these conditions can lead to a more supportive and compassionate environment on campus and in society.
Following the presentation, the seminar shifted focus to managing emotions. The speaker, a mental health expert, shared valuable insights into recognizing emotional responses and managing them effectively, particularly in high-stress environments such as academics and social situations. Students were encouraged to reflect on their emotional reactions and explore strategies for coping with stress, anxiety, and other emotions that can interfere with well-being. The seminar provided practical tools, such as mindfulness techniques, breathing exercises, and cognitive reframing, to help students navigate their emotions more effectively.
A key feature of the seminar was the Q&A session, where students had the chance to ask questions and engage with the speaker. This interactive portion allowed students to address personal concerns and seek advice on how to handle specific emotional challenges they may face in their daily lives. The expert guidance provided during the Q&A session gave students a deeper understanding of how to apply the concepts discussed in real-world situations.
The seminar was a step toward promoting mental health awareness at JIU, with the hope that students would leave with a better understanding of their emotional needs and how to manage them. It also emphasized the importance of seeking help, when necessary, whether through counseling or other support services. Overall, the event aimed to foster a healthier, more emotionally resilient campus community, where mental health is prioritized as a key component of overall well-being.
