From May 24 – 29, 2023, a team of students and supervisors from Jakarta International University (UIJ) engaged in community service activities in Loksado, South Kalimantan. The local residents warmly welcomed the team, sharing their experiences, culture, and daily lives, which enriched the overall service experience. The team consisted of 28 members, including 6 supervisors and 22 students. Upon arriving in Kalimantan, they gathered for a meal and traveled to Loksado, where they set up their base camp. They held meetings with local representatives to plan their teaching activities at local schools.
On the second day, the team taught basic math and origami to fifth graders, rewarding the best students with small gifts. In the afternoons, they helped clean the surrounding environment and engaged with the community. On the third day, the team taught English and introduced basic coding to students. They also gave souvenirs to express gratitude for the warm welcome. In the evening, they participated in local festivities.
The fourth day included a nature walk to Air Terjun Riam Hanai, where the team enjoyed the natural beauty before planting trees around the base camp. They held a youth service that evening, bonding with local youth through games and sharing snacks. On May 28, the team engaged with local children and participated in community activities, expressing their appreciation through songs and gifts. They concluded their stay by cleaning the base camp and sharing reflections on their experience.
Overall, the team felt embraced by the community, which enhanced their service journey. Interactions with the students and residents filled them with joy, highlighting the potential and hope for the future of Loksado. The challenges faced during the trip were met with determination and collaboration, making the experience memorable and impactful.
