Jakarta International University (JIU) celebrated Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day on August 17, 2026, with a flag ceremony and traditional games on campus. Students, faculty, and staff came together to mark the occasion and celebrate one of the most important days in Indonesia’s history.
The celebration brought the JIU community together to remember the country’s independence and take part in activities that are part of Indonesia’s annual Independence Day tradition.

Remembering Indonesia’s Independence
The event began with a flag ceremony commemorating Indonesia’s proclamation of independence on August 17, 1945. The ceremony offered a moment for the university community to honor the people who fought for the nation’s freedom and reflect on the meaning of Independence Day.
JIU is home to people from different backgrounds, making the occasion an opportunity to appreciate Indonesian history and culture together.

Traditional Games Bring the Community Together
After the ceremony, students and staff joined traditional Independence Day competitions. The games brought a more festive atmosphere to campus and gave participants a chance to enjoy the celebration outside their usual academic and work routines.
The competitions also encouraged teamwork and friendly competition. As participants joined the games and cheered each other on, the activities created opportunities for students and staff to interact and spend time together.

Celebrating Unity Through Shared Traditions
Indonesia’s Independence Day is an annual reminder of the country’s history and the importance of unity among its people. The principle of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, or Unity in Diversity, remains relevant in a university community where people from different backgrounds learn and work together.
Through the flag ceremony and traditional games, JIU celebrated the occasion while giving its community time to connect through shared traditions. The celebration ended with a sense of togetherness, bringing students, faculty, and staff together to mark Indonesia’s 81st year of independence.
